April was designated genocide awareness month by many institutions throughout the world. At Francis Lewis High School, students will create artwork and informative posters to raise awareness about many different genocides around the world. After an intensive study of the Holocaust in Global History students have learned that we must protect innocent people, prosecute perpetrators, prevent future atrocities, by raising awareness and remembering those who have suffered, all around the world.
April 14, 2016 tenth grade students at Francis Lewis HS will participate in Operation Generation without Genocide. Students will be assigned specific genocides that they are interested learning about and they will incorporate art into their project using images, paintings, poetry and quotes to show visual aspects of genocide. Some students will also present their proposal on how to successfully take steps to raise awareness and end genocide. The 10th grade students will take on the responsibility of teaching the 9th grade Global History students by educating the students and raising awareness in our own high school. We hope that the students will truly understand the concept of genocide and create awareness about the atrocities that continue to occur in our world today.
