Social Studies

Francis Lewis High School
Welcome to the Social Studies department at Francis Lewis High School! In addition to our regular classes, we offer electives like the Jacob Javits Law Academy and International Relations Program.  We also have class trips, guest speakers, and school wide events like Mock Election and the Civil Rights Symposium. Finally, we offer 5 AP courses, including AP World History, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Human Geography.

SOCIAL STUDIES ELECTIVES

The International Relations Track incorporates three different electives which expose students to issues on an international scale. Students will learn about current events, identify the origins and reasons for conflict, research various issues around the world, participate in mock debates, track the progression of human rights and better prepare themselves to be active citizens in the global community.
I have been part of the International Relations Program since my freshman year and have loved being part of this program ever since. I would recommend this program to other students due to the endless number of opportunities. For instance, in this program we get to take many trips such as visiting the United Nations Headquarters. This program also helps better prepare ourselves to be active citizens in the global community.
The International Relations Program is a very hands-on and teamwork oriented program. In the first year of the program, we did projects regarding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a mock trial (we put a world leader on trial on whether or not he was guilty of violating human rights), and at the end of the year, participated in a “Walk for Water” event where we made projects discussing the issue of clean water.
The International Relations program has been by far one of my favorite classes because it is really interesting to learn about real time and past problems the world has faced. We also got to go on fun trips. I would truly recommend taking this program because it helps with other classes.

Welcome to the Jacob Javits Law Academy at Francis Lewis High School. This law academy is a Career and Technical Education certificate program for high school students, grades 9 through 12. At the Jacob Javits Law Academy, you will have an opportunity to learn about law in a way that will be of practical use to you. The courses are designed to provide you with an understanding of your legal rights, responsibilities and knowledge of everyday legal problems. It will also provide you with the ability to analyze, evaluate and resolve legal controversies.
Our approach to law related education includes case studies, mock trials, debates and role-playing. The Academy utilizes community experiences such as court tours and guest speakers, including judges, attorneys and officers of the law. We have an affiliation with the Manhattan law firm of Proskauer Rose, LLP, who assist students in preparing for Moot Court competitions. Many of the Academy students are also placed in prestigious law internships, including the Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program and Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program with the New York City Bar Association.

Upon completion of the required number of courses and activities, students will receive a certificate in law-related education and three college credits.
My experience at the law program at Francis Lewis has been amazing. I’m learning so much about our government and expanding my knowledge about the civil and criminal court. My teacher is the best and explains all her lessons throughly. By the end of class you will learn something new about our government.
My experience with the law program is very interesting because not only do I learn about law but I also learn more about what is happening currently in the world. I would recommend the program to other students because the program really gets your mind working and makes you think deeply.
I love the school's Law Program. We learn things that effect our lives as American citizens. Knowing our fundamental rights is important. This class could also help some make the right decisions since they know law and its consequences. The information that we learn in the class can be used for the rest of our lives.
