THIS IS OUR CITY

Who is Bill de Blasio?

Picture
Bill de Blasio graduated from NYU and studied at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Currently, he stands as a husband to New York City's First Lady Chirlane McCray and a father to his children Dante and Chiara

As current New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio fights to make this city—our city--a safer and better place for everyone—no matter what the situation is for the resident.

Before his election as Mayor, Bill de Blasio was elected to the New York’s City Council in 2002. While on the Council, he focused and put full attention on improving public education, expanding affordable housing, and protecting New York’s middle-class and working poor. New investments in early childhood education were won through his universal pre-K program and he wrote  a landmark tenants’ rights legislation to protect affordable housing and end landlord discrimination for all New Yorkers.
Bill de Blasio served as Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development before becoming mayor. He also served as a campaign manager for Hillary Clinton’s historic campaign for U.S. Senate.
The Mayor started working in public services as a junior staffer for New York City’s first African American mayor, David N. Dinkins. Bill de Blasio has had much experience in politics and public services to help benefit the city.

Issues

The mayor, like his predecessor, Michael R. Bloomberg, is also trying to harness the energy of the private market to compel developers and landlords to keep apartment rents below the market rate for the long term.In July, he heralded a numeric accomplishment: 77,651 units financed so far.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will appear on the Working Families Party ballot line this November, after the New York City Board of Elections narrowly overrode an objection to the party's petitions, and a potential legal challenge was dropped.

RIGHTS FOR ALL Mayor de Blasio created IDNYC to give all New Yorkers—including veterans, gender nonconforming individuals, and immigrants—a simple way to access government services, open bank accounts, and provide ID to local law enforcement. The largest municipal ID program in the country, IDNYC now has over 1 million cardholders.
ThriveNYC starts by working to destigmatize mental illness, training 250,000 New Yorkers in mental health “first aid” and encouraging an open conversation about mental health.

The de Blasio Administration has created seven neighborhood health action centers around the city, providing community-based health clinics and programs in neighborhoods with disproportionately high rates of chronic disease and premature death.

The Mayor signed into law the Criminal Justice Reform Act, a group of bills to build stronger, safer communities by reducing arrests and incarceration for low-level offenses. These bills allow officers to issue a civil ticket instead of taking criminal action for around 100,000 low-level, nonviolent offenses every year.

The Mayor proposed a millionaires tax on our city’s wealthy residents to modernize the deteriorating subway and bus system. The millionaires tax would raise $800 million annually to fund MTA improvements, and provide 800,000 low-income New Yorkers with half-priced MetroCards.
