Hotline Bible Lyrics
Chorus: We used to call up our disciples,
late night when we need a Bible,
Call up our disciples,
late night when we need a Bible,
Come worship at the Holy Land,
and read the Old/New Testament,
Come worship at the Holy Land,
and read the Old/New Testament
Verse 1: Ever since we left the Church, Spain,
Started to begin the Inquisition,
Put us in a difficult position,
Burned us at the stake cause’ we commit sins,
But ever since Virgin Mary gave birth,
People started worshipping in Jesus,
Believe in Christianity that frees us
from all of our troubles and relieves us…
Chorus: We used to call up our disciples,
late night when we need a Bible,
Call up our disciples,
late night when we need a Bible,
Come worship at the Holy Land,
and read the Old/New Testament,
Come worship at the Holy Land,
and read the Old/New Testament
Verse 2: These days, all I do is wonder if you praying over back was
all for yourself,
Wonder if the selfishness and greediness was any help,
Doing things you thought would help you become a better
self,
You neglected everyone else,
Now, just trust in our God’s plan,
Oh, you could never be alone ,
Me and Jesus on the road,
Used to always go to church, you were in the zone,
Yeah,
Right now you’re someone else, you should just be

Group 2 - Art
This is a painting of a stain glass that incorporates an important scene from the belief system's history, religious/major beliefs, founder, geographic origin, sacred text, place of worship, and figures of important people that associates with the belief system. The reason why we chose to do a painting of a stain glass image is because stain glass is a beautiful way to help represent the windows of the churches and the elements of Christianity. We incorporated elements that depict stories of Christianity. The important scene is the light that speaks to Jesus which is Angel Gabriel. The religious/major belief is the cross which represents Christianity. The founder is Jesus Christ. The geographic origin is the background of Palestine seen through the windows. The sacred text is the bible and the place of worship is the church in the background. The important figures that is also incorporated is Joseph and Mary. Doves and lambs are also added to show peace(doves) and renewal(lamb).
Group 3 - Origins
- In approximately what year and place did this belief system originate?
2. Who is the founder and how did the belief system originate? If there is no founder how did the belief system come about? Explain.
Jesus Christ was the founder of Christianity. The religion originated from a small place by the East Mediterranean Sea, known as Palestine. The Jews viewed Palestine as "The Promised Land” that is referenced in the Holy Bible. In 63 B.C, when Rome took over Jerusalem and Palestine, the land was still under the Roman Empire rule during the time of Jesus' birth. When Rome took over, Palestine offered the ancient religion of Judaism that later converted into Christianity. The earliest converts of Christianity as well as Jesus and his apostles were Jews. By the age of 30, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and had envisioned himself receiving God's blessings. Jesus would later begin the teachings of healing and miracle-work. Jesus spoke in front of crowds, and those who followed him, believed him to be the long awaited Messiah. Others like the Romans thought little of Jesus for coming out to say he that was the son of God.
3. Explain who is the supreme being(s) (if there is one)
The supreme “being” or ultimate “being” in Christianity refers to God who is almighty and superior to all. Although God is the father, the supreme "being" can also be referred to as Jesus Christ or the Son of God. In the Trinity, one God exists in three forms, one as Father, one as Son, and another as the Holy Spirit, which is why Christians may also refer Jesus Christ as the supreme being. When people pray they are praying to both God and Jesus because they are considered as one. Since the Trinity is considered as one, another term for one God is monotheistic. While God is the creator, Jesus is considered the savior of humanity as he had died on the cross for his people and their sins.
4. Are there any religious leaders or leaders in general of the belief system? (Example priests, shamans) Explain their role, whether it be from the past or present?
Today the leaders of Christianity churches are called pastors or ministers. In the the book of the Holy Bible, it says that to God the church is His Head, Body, and Spirit. To handle this big responsibility that is given to a leader of a church, they must have these four qualifications; worshipping, counseling, having leadership, and being knowledgable. In the past, an apostle of Jesus, who later became one of the leaders in the first generation of Christians and helped spread Christianity was named Paul. Paul preached and taught about God and Jesus throughout the Roman Empire and traveling far and wide to convert people into the religion of Christianity. Many people such as the Gentiles also started to follow Paul and his teachings about God and Jesus.
5. What is the symbol of the belief system? Explain why this symbol is used to represent the belief system.
The symbol of Christianity is the cross. This symbol represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his passion, and death. It is used because it's a sign of Christ and it shows the faith of all Christians. If the sign of a cross is shown, it shows prayer, faith, and dedication.
6. How did this belief system spread to other regions? If the belief system did not spread to other regions explain why.
Paul culturally diffused Christianity to many places. He spent his life preaching and interpreting Christianity. As converts to Christianity increased, the religion spread. Christianity became the accepted religion of Rome, spreading throughout the empire, with the founding of the New World it also began to spread beyond Europe and Asia as well. Among the early missionaries were the Catholics, who journeyed to Central and South America, seeking to convert native people. Protestants escaping persecution traveled to North America and brought their beliefs with them. By the 1900s, Christianity was a major world religion that existed in every country and continent.
Group 4 - Beliefs and Values
- What are the major beliefs of the belief system? Describe and explain each belief.
2. What are the values of the belief system? Describe and explain each value.
Major Christian values are to maintain faith and belief in God, humble yourself, be generous and do good works, don’t be self-righteous, forgive others, and repent your sins. Christians must be the opposite of arrogant, boastful, or aggressive so they must be humble, generous, selfless, and respect others. Jesus was crucified and paid a price for us, so we must eliminate self-righteousness. We shouldn’t be ones to judge others, but God. As a Christian, one must commit and have faith in God and repent their sins to God. These are all values taught in the Bible.
3. What does the place of worship look like? (If there is one) What is the name of this structure? Why is this the place of worship?
Christians worship in a place called the Church. At first, people prayed anywhere they wanted as long it was safe for them. But then, when God came down to Earth and helped the people, the people wanted to show their respect and faith, so they built Him sanctuaries and saved some holy places just for Him.Then, after years they named it the “Church” and it means “the place for divine worship”. Churches are built in a cross-shape because Jesus was killed in a cross. They are also rectangular in length. Some of the objects that are in a church are the organ, the altar, the nave, and the Cross and crucifix. The organs are used to play or accompany the chanting of hymns.
4. What are some of the holy/important/symbolic places that are associated with the belief system?
There are many holy and important places that are associated with Christianity. Churches are a crucial place to the Christians because it’s where they worship God at every Sunday. Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus and Nazareth, the place where Jesus grew up is also significant to Christians. Galilee, Jesus’ home, his place of teaching, the home to many churches, and where many of his miracle works is seen is also important to Christianity. Capernaum is similar to Galilee because it was also believed to be Jesus’ home, the center of his ministries, and where many of his miracles is performed also making it to be a significant part in Christianity. The Jordan River is also important because it was Israel's most sacred body of water where Jesus was baptized and where John the Baptist baptized the people who repented their sins. Mount of Olives is where Jesus prayed to God the last time before being betrayed by one of his disciples, Judas, therefore also making it an important place and lastly, the Vatican City is also a significant place because it’s the headquarters to the Roman Catholic church and the home to the pope.
5. Describe the belief system’s views about death and afterlife. If there are any important ceremonies that take place include them also.* Explain.Death is something that happens to everyone in their lives. In Christianity, Christians believe that there is a heaven after they pass away in which they can enjoy the presence of God. In addition to heaven, Christians believe in hell which is seen as a place of suffering in which nonbelievers and sinners are punished. Catholic Christians believe in something called a purgatory which was thought to be a place where Christians with sins after death are punished. When a Christian dies, a funeral is held for the friends and family to grieve for the person who died. This funeral takes place in a week after the death and takes place in a church or at a crematorium. A crematorium is a chamber that incinerates the dead person leaving only the remaining bones.
6. Is there a central administration for the belief system? If yes, how is it organized? (Example: Catholicism is organized by the Pope) Explain.
Christianity is the largest religion in the world, with about two billion followers. All of Christianity has a central administration organized by bishops. Bishops are considered the successors of the apostles. Apostles are twelve chief disciples of Jesus Christ. Bishops are high priests, pastors, popes, and patriarchs of the the church. In catholicism the pope is the head bishop. The pope is reliable in matters like morals and faith. The Catholic Church is the biggest Christian denomination, with a billion members worldwide. The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and is governed as an absolute monarchy. Pope Francis holds full legislative, executive, and judicial powers. Pope Francis’s full name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio and he was elected the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. He is the first pope born in the Americas, more specifically, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lastly, His birthday is on December 17, 1936 .
Another sect of Christianity is Eastern Orthodoxy and it consists of 300 million members worldwide. Eastern Orthodoxy is organized by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Bartholomew I is the Ecumenical Patriarch and Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and the the 270th successor of the local Christian Church founded by St. Andrew. He is the first in order among all Orthodox Bishops and considered a special patriarch. His real name is Dimitrios Arhondonis and he was born in Turkey, on February 29, 1940. Thus, Catholicism is organized by the Pope, while Eastern Orthodoxy is organized by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.
Group 5 - International Concerns
1)Can women and men hold the leadership/spiritual roles within the belief system? (Example: can women lead prayer or become a priest)* Explain.
Women cannot hold the leadership/spiritual roles within the belief system. As stated in the bible, "Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence" (I Timothy 2). This shows how only men can lead roles in the religion, a women can learn but not take over. A women cannot take a position that wasn't given to her by God.
2) Name two important historical figures, other than the founder/supreme being (that come out of this belief system and explain why they are important. If the religion is polytheistic, discuss 2 gods or goddesses).
One of the many important historical figures that came out of this belief system is Constantine. During his time period, Christianity was already growing in popularity. Many people felt welcomed into the religion and looked towards it for hope. Although many Christians were persecuted for not worshiping Roman gods, believing that there was only one god, Christianity continued to strengthen. Constantine, a Roman emperor wanting to defeat the others fighting for power, prayed for help to win the fight. He saw a cross and told his soldiers to place those symbols on their shields, which he believed is how he won the war. He became the first ruler to accept Christianity as a practice and that allowed Christianity to continue to spread. Another one of the many important historical figures that came out of this religion is Jesus. Jesus was believed to be the reincarnation of god. He spread Christianity as much as he could before he was crucified and killed. His purpose was to teach and spread Christianity and to suffer and die for people’s sins. He was believed to have risen from the dead after his killing and had went to heaven.
3) What are 2-3 of the major holidays/festivals that are associated with the belief system? Briefly describe them and their significance in your own words.
One of the major holidays associated with Christianity is Easter Sunday. This is a time when believers go to church and celebrate with a feast of food. This day is significant because it was when Christ came back from the dead. Another one of the major holidays that is associated with Christianity is Christmas. This is the time when people exchange gifts and have parties. This day is significant because this was the birthday of Christ.
4) Where is the belief system is mainly practiced today? Why? Explain. If it is not commonly practiced today, explain why.
Christians are widely spread geographically and Christianity is practiced all over. Christianity is mainly practiced throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia, mainly Russia, and Oceania/Australia. In the Roman Empire, Paul who was an apostle, had believed in spreading Jesus' teachings through Christianity. He declared that Christianity would welcome converters, Jews and non Jews. There was tensions between Christians and Romans because of this Christianity was declared illegal. When Constantine became the Roman Emperor he legalized Christianity and Christianity became to gain strength and spread even more. Then after European conquers on North and South America it had spread out even more. Many converted to Christianity because of the different factors that had appealed to people.
5) How many adherents (followers) does this belief system have? What percentage of the world population practices this belief system?
Christianity is practiced all over the globe and one of the many common religions in the world today. Adherents that follow Christianity identify themselves as Christians. Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world. Christianity has approximately two billion adherents. With about two billion Christians practice Christianity, it is about 32% of the world population.
6) Is the belief system religiously tolerant? How does the religion promote peace (NOTE: they all do)? Explain.
Christianity is not religiously tolerant. Jesus has said that as God's incarnate (John 1:1, 14, Col. 2:9), he'd be the only way to God. He proved his statement by fulfilling prophecy and doing many other things such as walking on water, rising from the dead, etc. Christianity promotes peace by loving the people that surround us and even people we may dislike. All Christians stand for this because they want to show acceptance and you can't show that by having hatred towards others. Although Christians may not agree or believe anything of another religion, they accept the fact that some believe in different things.
Group 6 - Divisions, Sections, Etc.
- What are the main branches, divisions, or sects of the belief system? Why did the belief system divide into branches, divisions, or sects?
2. Briefly explain each branch, division, or sect. including the major beliefs, values, important beings, founders, dates, and place of origin.
Christianity had three main sections, Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. At one point each had a great power in the lands of christianity. Christianity first originated as cleansing the Jewish religion of stiff rituals and haughty leaders. This was going on around the time of Augustus (Octavian) Caesar. At the era Jesus of Nazareth was preaching for moral conduct through love, charity, and humility. Many low class people thought highly of these preachings due to it being supporting the common folk. Later Jesus was crucified by the Romans. After his demise a Roman general by the name of Constantine gained power and converted the empire to Christianity. After the fall of the Empire the Eastern side of the empire became the Byzantine empire and had a different viewpoint of the religion and their beliefs became Orthodox. Later during the time of the Holy Roman Empire, Protestants grew in numbers and fought catholic members of the empire for equality.
The Catholics are by far the largest branch with nearly 1 billion followers. The main importance of Catholic portion of Christianity is their belief of the pope. Also, the catholic praying is more formal than protestant praying.
The Orthodox are different for their origin in the Byzantine empire. More or less their beliefs are the same as catholics. The one reason that likely led to their split is the fall of the Western Empire of Rome.
The protestants whom take many beliefs of Catholicism with them. However, protestants do have some differences, one of these differences include its origin. The parts of protestantism that are closely tied with catholicism go back to the time of Jesus in the Roman province of Judea, however, more modern changes have occurred leading protestantism to being a branch of Christianity. The newer changes have been made in Europe; the English for example fully acknowledge the protestant church which is based in the England. The first big thing to note about protestants is that the word protestant means “to protest”. Protestants protest the pope, and his ideology of Jesus’ apostles.
Another decently sized group are the lutherans. These people believe in smaller massings and less frequent massings. This differs from other more “fanatic” groups. Overall those are the main ideology differences between the three biggest branches of Christianity and Lutherans.
3. In what ways do the branches, divisions, or sects differ from a the original belief system?
Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism differs from the original belief system of Christianity in many ways. Catholicism differs from Christianity in various ways. Christians use the Holy Bible, but Catholics also use a collection of 73 canonical books ( Old Testament and New Testament.) Though Christians worship in Church on Sundays, Catholics worship continually. Sunday is not the only day, Catholics attend church. The two beliefs also differ in the way you can actually be accepted my God. Christianity stated that if someone has faith in Jesus, trusts him and follows him, then they will be acceptable to God. Catholicism, on the other hand, states that acceptance by God does depend partly on the life you have lived. Orthodox differs from Christianity in many ways. For example, in Christianity, the clergy could be a priest, bishop, minister, monk, or a nun. In Orthodox practices, the clergy could also be a patriarch. Though, Orthodox Christianity and Christianity believe that God is one yet in three persons (Trinity), their goals are slightly different. Christianity believes that you should obey God forever and glorify him. Orthodoxy believes that eternal life is the chief goal for everyone. Based on Christianity, God gave humans freedom. If they misuse it, they'll receive punishment. For Orthodoxs, humans were created in the image of God. The result of sin was a blurring in the image of God, causing a barrier between God and Man. Protestantism differs from Christianity also. The use of statues and pictures was important to Christianity, but Protestants don't use them. While, most Christians confess their sins straight to God or a priest, Protestants confess sins only to God. Like the original belief, Protestantism uses the Holy Bible, but also a collection of canonical books, in two parts (Old Testament and New Testament.)
4. In what ways are the branches, divisions, or sects similar to the original belief system?
Christianity is a religion based on the teaching of life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is also a monotheistic, belief of only one god. The 3 main branches of Christianity is similar to the original belief system. Christianity developed from Judaism. The three main branches of Christianity are Protestantism, Catholicism, and Orthodox. Christians belief that there is a holy trinity formed by creator, redeemer, sustainer. They believe that Jesus is divine Messiah. They believe that Jesus was the son of god and was sent to Earth to cleanse the world of sin. The christians believe that humanity can achieve salvation. They believe in afterlife. The different branches and the original belief system of christianity all worship the bible. They worship god through the traditional style of liturgy. The holy trinity states that there is only one god and god is the creator of the universe. The three main branches’ geographic origin is Rome.
5. Make a timeline of at least 3 important events for the branch, division, or sect. Briefly explain the important event.
Christianity has a long timeline in which important events have occurred. These events led up to the variety and ideology of Christianity and their beliefs. The timeline starts out with the crucifixion of Jesus. This event led people to revolt against the Roman Empire. Constantine made Catholicism the official religion of the empire. Over time, the Roman Empire fell due to barbarians, mongols, and greed and corruption inside the government. The empire also split due to different branches of christianity. This leads to the split of the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church in 1054 A.D. After the rise of the Protestant Religion, (the Protestant Reformation), the Holy Roman Empire had many wars over which Christian religion should remain in power, Catholic or Protestant.

Roman Empire Falls Protestant Reformation
476 A.D 1517 - 1648 A.D
6. Could the divide in the belief system have been avoided? Why or why not? Use specific pieces of evidence from credible sources to support your answer.
The belief system’s fate of being divided was inevitable due to the fact that some christians have different opinions and interpretations on certain aspects of the bible. These interpretation lead to its own division because as some followers of Christianity follow god's value to the point. For example, some churches believe that homosexuality shouldn’t be allowed however some churches allow it. Also, another topic that divided Christianity is the idea whether God will save all people despite their different beliefs or that God will only save those who follow him. These opinions have lead to its own division and this can not be avoided.
Group 7 - Issues/Solutions
1. What important conflicts has your belief system experienced either in present day or at some point in world history?
Throughout the years, all religions are bound to face face conflicts that challenge their belief
system. Christianity, similarly encountered such challenges in which they were to decide
favoring their beliefs. An examples of this is the controversial issue over homosexuality.
According to the bible, Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with
a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their
bloodguiltness is upon them." This demonstrates a person being gay is committing a sin and
should be put to death. Another important ongoing conflict today is the clash of faith of
Christianity and Islam. While Christianity attacks the Islamic belief in Muhammad, the
messenger of Allah, Islam contradicts the belief that Jesus is Son of God.
2. Why did the conflict begin? Has the conflict been resolved? If so, what was the result? Explain.
Although homeosexuals aren't hanged or killed, because of laws and regulations, these
people are definitely oppressed are deprived of some rights. Some churches do not allow
homeosexuals to enter such a holy place and spread they political and social beliefs towards
other “pure” Christians. Although there isn't a concrete solution to this, protesting might be
helpful to gain attention which would initiate debates for gay rights. One of the most important
and crucial ongoing conflict is Islam vs. Christianity. Although there is no specific date or time
of when this all began, over the years, it's been noted the two religions have opposing views and
arguments. Christians viewed Muslims as worshipping a false god through a false prophet, the
Muslims were more concerned with the Christians' false belief in their worship of a God that was
not human. This conflict has no solution yet because the two religions refused to cooperate with
one another. One way to get past these differences is to find common agreement point and then
talk. Communication is important because they might actually find more common things and
respect for one another.
3. What is your belief system’s perspective towards issues of violence/oppression? Is there one group (towards others or within your religion) who is oppressed or treated violently? Why?
Violence is something that is expressed by every human being, different religions see it
in different ways. In Christianity, it is believed that violence is a human response arising from
jealousy, fear, or hatred. Violence is against God’s will and purpose, so war and violence should
be avoided. Humans should be loving, forgiving, and compassionate, Clear and unambiguous
prohibition killing is resisting God’s will. Christians were oppressed, treated violently and was
the target of persecution many times throughout the years. Around 561 AD the Jews massacred
many Christians, with the Persians as allies. The Jews didn't believe that the beliefs of Christians
were correct and thought that the prophets were only Jews so the Christians were lying. Over the
years they were prosecuted many times for their beliefs by people who didn't believe them.
4. Describe any actions (if applicable) taken by the central administration of the belief system towards resolving issues of violence/oppression.
The Christians’ goals in the central administration is to end violence for women in their
own homes, the violence of war, to end culture of violence found in movies, music, videos, and
computer games. Christians also want to end violence in whatever form it may appear in our
communities. Christians have protested against the use of gunsviolence
after the very tragic
shooting at Sandy hook, where 20 students were killed. That protest helped push pass the
Firearm Safety Act of 2013, which includes a provision requiring fingerprint licensing for gun
purchases. Christians protest a lot against things they do not believe in. Protesting can also be
dangerous for christians considering they are not accepted in all societies. Christians also have
small organizations on the side of their regularly church schedules to help women who need to
escape an abusive relationship. Other religions have more aggressive rules to their religion but
christianity is more about loving yourself and one another people.
5. What actions have been taken at the communal level (individuals, local church groups, community organizations etc.) towards resolving issues of violence/oppression.
Christians resolve issues in a more mannerly way to solve issues of violence and
oppression. The actions that have been taken at the communal level towards issues of violence
and oppression are by protesting, praying, and advertising. Christians protest against things that
the bible forbids to happen or events going on in the world that should be stopped, such as ISIS.
Although protesting can sometimes lead to violence, the christians have a way of protesting
without causing any harm. If a terrible issue that might have occurred within a community,
christians resort to praying, the community might have a local church where people gather and
pray to jesus for the issue to come to an end. Christians advertise by handing out fliers on a busy
street, they would advertise about the violence going on in the world and ways to overcome and
solve these issues. The filers can gather a community to discuss ways to stop issues of violence
and oppression. Many religions may support violence, but christians have methods such as
actions to resolve important issues of violence and oppression by communal level.
6. What more can be done to address these issues? Discuss already proposed ideas and come up with your own, original ideas towards a peaceful resolution.
The Christian people see violence and oppression as sins, or a wrongdoings, and they
want to end it. For example, they protest at gay pride parades because they see homosexuals as
sinners. Another way Christians address issues is to pray. There have been some instances where
Christians pray outside of Planned Parenthood clinics, and ask God to forgive the people inside.
So, in order to voice their opinions, Christians protest and pray. Since these protests can spark
controversy and heighten tensions between Christians and the people they disagree with, some
more peaceful resolutions should be put into place. For example, Christians should learn how to
coexist with people of different religions and/or beliefs. They can do this, by listening to the
other side of the story and finding out the reasons the people do what they do. People having
different beliefs does not hurt anyone else, and makes the world more diverse and accepting.
